Recommended Listening: Destroyer – Kaputt

Recommended Listening: Destroyer – Kaputt

I havn’t always been a Destroyer fan but Dan Bejar’s new album is absolutely incredible. It won’t sound that unfamiliar to you if you’re a fan of the New Pornagraphers as he’s been singing with Carl Newman for years.

Filled with dreamy synth pads, misplaced saxophones, and the hush whisper of Mr. Bejar’s voice I just can’t stop listening to it.

Most Destroyer records take a bit of time to get used to, but this is as welcoming as it is different. The record has hybrid mix of drum pads that evolve into real recorded drums then back to pads. Topped with reverby guitars and yes again, that dang saxophone!

I don’t claim to understand everything Bejar’s is doing, I’m …

    Club Monaco Spring ’11

    Club Monaco Spring ’11

Rarely do I play favorites (unless I’m talking about Michael Bastian cause he’s the shiz) but I said it before and I’ll say it again.

    Club Monaco is fantastic.

Good prices, good fabric and great clothes.

Don’t get me wrong, I can’t and won’t wear everything they put out but, the stuff that I like I really like.

Like their new cotton blazer, unstructured and perfectly casual. Made out of your favorite sweat pants (not used of course!)

I would say three’s a trend with that one! (corneliani, lardini, club monaco)

Club Monaco continues to pull a bit from that Anglo-Italian look that everyone seems to be up on. I think what excites me the most is Club Monaco …

      Haversack F/W 2011

      Haversack F/W 2011

      Wow…where to begin.

A lot of companies right now are trying to create new trends.

Haversack doesn’t care about those trends. They care about the reliving the old ones.

The “old school dandy” (spoken in a thick Japanese accent)

If you havn’t heard about Haversack you have now. They try to be as true to the inspired time as possible. Re-creating fabrics from vintage ones.

They’re like Jurassic Park’s John Hammond of clothing.

      “Spared no expense”

…and they don’t spare any expense. Which is also why their clothes are so expensive. HA!

Expensive yes, but absolutely beautiful and stunning.

Haversack is a lot closer to what your grandpa used to wear than what you told your friends your grandpa wore. …

        Things I’ve Been Learning

Now and again I do my best to see past the bs that is the world I think I live in and look at the things that are important.

        * I might love clothes but I love my friends 1000x more

        * Speaking of friends, make sure you have more that are smarter than you. It will help you out because you’ll most likely make a fool out of yourself…all the time.

        * Never underestimate the power of manners…or a good tailor

        * Pre-marital counseling is kind of the coolest thing on earth

        * Working out at the gym consistently is easier when you go to a real gym

        * Fleetwood Mac is still probably one of the best bands …

          well…

          well…

if you got the time head on over to capsule this week. it should be a grand ole time, lots of good designers showing their finest!

you’ll also catch a bunch of people trying to take pictures with their point and shoot for their blog.

          FREE PIZZA*

*i lied no free pizza you cheapskate…

            Classic…

            Classic…

Some people say you can learn a lot about a guy from his shoes, some say his watch.

            I say ask the guy.

I love me a nice watch though.

For some folks, including myself the grail watch is this…

Yup, that’s the Rolex Daytona REF 6241 aka the Paul Newman Daytona.

Why is it called the “Paul Newman” Daytona?

Well, for starters Paul Newman made it popular!

Mr. Newman received the watch in 1972 from Joanne Woodward after filming the movie Winning. Back then it really wasn’t a very popular watch (seriously), not many folks wanted to wear manual wound chronographs and quartz was fast becoming all the rage. Paul became quite attached to the watch, and fell …

              So Precious

              So Precious

Whew, got that previous post out of the way and I can get back to my love and question of “Why are japanese style magazines so much better than ours?”

Let’s start with Men’s Precious, a seasonal magazine filled with great pictures and wonderful interviews. I only know about the interviews because I beg my Japanese friend to translate! Yeah!

Recently they did a feature on Brunello Cucinelli and even though I despise his prices and business tactics, he makes some pretty cool stuff!

              Hiking boots anyone?!

I’ve said it a few times and not too many folks can do the “Italian sportswear chic” like Brunello…wait a minute…Cantarelli is really awesome too, and so is Boglioli and …

                Here’s To 2011

                Here’s To 2011

Once a year folks round up, have a few drinks, and talk about what they’re going to do different starting that next week (usually lasting the same amount of time.)

                It’s called New Years Eve!

It’s a glorious holiday filled with booze, funny hats and bad talk show hosts.

Do I sound crabby here? Depressed?

Not in the slightest! New Years is a big deal to me, I love it! It really is a time to try and make changes (or at least attempt to) and be thankful for everyone around you.

Thanks everyone for coming and hanging out here on my blog, for sending me funny emails and for all the free cars oven mitts!

God Bless You All and …
