There is nothing new under the sun right? Not so with the new Weejuns Mr. Mark McNairy has been doctoring up.

I won’t start this off by reminiscing from when I used to wear Weejuns because honestly, I never did. I wasn’t cool enough or rich enough etc. whatever (I was wearing my Andrew Reynolds emericas but, that’s another story).

You just can’t go wrong with these new Weejuns.

The honey brown scotch grain camp mocc was one of my favorites. I almost stole them all from the booth at capsule. It was a great update to the current collection and made me excited for next spring. Looks like “this guy” might picking a pair up!

Also, the tasseled loafer with the kiltie was great. It might take a little extra bravery to wear but, its just a classic shoe to me.

Now and again I get questions from readers asking for advice or my opinion. While I’m usually quite humbled by all of this, always keep in mind this is just my opinion and well; you asked for it.

Euvin asks…

Greetings! I’m a big fan of the blog. I was just wondering what you thought about wearing hats with suits or hats in general? I have a couple of fedoras but my girlfriend says I look like Justin Timberlake. Do you like baseball hats? Get back to me whenever you can. Thanks!

Well Euvin…

First off your name is awesome, I got Jeremy instead of Euvin but I think its doing me good for now.

As for hats with suits, I think it really depends on how you pull it off. If you wanna wear a trilby or a fedora with a suit go for it.

I wouldn’t wear it like this though

or this

it just looks like you’re trying too hard.

Like a trilby with a t-shirt is kind of lame, and the whole “punk leather jacket rebel but i’m not” is rather tacky too. Unless you’re actually Justin Timberlake in that case your girlfriend is just saying you look like yourself.

JT can do whatever he wants because he’s a rockstar (65 million records isn’t bad), we aren’t.

This looks good though

Don Draper

It’s classic and simple.

Baseball hat’s are another story, you gotta have some humor in your suit or outfit and make it look fun.

Mark McNairy does a great job here as well as Mister Mort.

Mark McNairy

Mister Mort in a Supreme 5 Panel hat

Notice they’re pieces are mismatched and all quirky. This might not look great on a Wall Street floor (what does anyway?) but it will look like money on any other street.

Its true, I really am on a camo kick right now. You might be reading this and thinking really? camo? So a few folks asked to see how I put camo in my wardrobe.

Lemme start off by saying, its not a goal to always make sure I’m wearing something with camo. It never has been, but recently I’ve realized how camo can really play down and add sportiness to any outfit.

Example, with these pants(Mark McNairy x MWR 8 Pocket Camo Cargos) I paired the camo with a Harris Tweed Blazer, Brooks Brothers Black Fleece Oxford, J.Press Tie, and last but not least some Alden Longwings (not shown).

I think there are a few simple rules when wearing camo

Mix it up, don’t let the camo control the outfit, Use it to play down what you’re wearing.

Pair it with something rugged, like a washed beat up oxford not a t-shirt.

Last, just make sure you never look like this guy.

Here are some other detail shots for you…

Yes my good buddy James from Secret Forts was kind enough to come and drop some knowledge and experience.

Heed his words folks. The man is too humble to ever ask for the credit he deserves, and he deserves all you can give him.

I copped these at the end of January. First met them at the Pop-Up Flea in November. Knew I had to have ‘em. Took me a little while to pull the trigger.

My first impression, they just felt right. There’s something to be said for a well made, classic shoe that has some wit to it. This is Mr. McNairy’s strong suit.Having some fun with the tried and true. Marrying elements not generally married to great effect. He’s truly making the new classics.

These represent a step up in my shoe game. My taste in footwear is well documented on my site, but these are kind of the nicest shoes I own. Cost doesn’t mean nice, these are just nice. I had been deliberating for some time between a few various pairs on which to drop a grip on. Aldens, although beautifully made and handsome in wear, kinda felt too serious unless you committed to really getting them beat up some. When I see an old pair, scuffed and roughed up, well, I like that. But seeing that they were (are) available at a certain retailer, I figured on finding another option.

Then I met these, red brick sole, goodyear welted, the right pebble grain, perfect tobacco color. These are light as shit, unlike Jeremy’s Thom Browne’s(heavy) which I like. Sizing a half size down was the right advice from Mr. Williams (There’s nothing more defeating than eagerly awaiting something only to find you have to send it back. Well, yes, there are plenty of things more defeating than that)

In terms of over all impression, 10 out of 10.

Bottom line, they’re dope. They fit right, have the nicest shape to them and are just “wink wink” enough not to feel like you’re wearing your grandfather’s wingtips(although, certainly nothing wrong with that.) They wear super well with denim or chino. I keep a cuff in both and like flashing a bit of ankle. Look forward to wearing them with shorts and s/s madras. They’re a year round shoe in my book.

Now, as to the past month and a half of wear, well, it’s a red brick sole and is already showing some wear at the rear of the heel and in the toe. I would be a bit bummed, if it weren’t for the goodyear welt and its ability to be easily resoled or repaired. I don’t look forward to having to, but good to have piece of mind. Otherwise, they’ve held form very well and continue to be my go to.

For the price, $360 USD, they’re a great investment. One you won’t be afraid to get dirty.

And with McNairy’s New Amsterdam collection, the hits, the variations, the new classics keep on coming.

More to come. Stay tuned for further dispatches.

Thanks to Jeremy for the invite to take part in Wear & Tear.
