Let me start off by saying that Max of All Plaid Out is a huge reason why this blog exists. He’s been a constant source encouragement and really helped SWT get off the ground. I remember running some ideas by him about things a year or so ago, and Max really hit me get my ducks in a row. I’m quite proud and happy to present Max’s post on his father’s Levi’s Jean jacket.

My dad gave me his denim jacket when I was in high school.

“I’ve had this since I was your age.”

I wore it to an 80s dance, “Everybody Have Fun Tonight.” Red bandana tight around my forehead, I wore that thing proud, pumping my fingerless-driving-gloved fist in the air. Those really were “Glory Days.”

I asked him about it the other day.

“Bought it at Sears. Wore the hell out of that thing. See those dark-thread repairs in the arms? I got attacked by a dog. Chewed up the jacket. Repaired it myself.”

I made the mistake of wearing it into a Double RL store, and one of the shop clerks went nuts. “Dude, Capital E!” I watched as he examined the thing inside and out. He said you can really tell its quality by the waistband. And what did he think of mine?

“This thing was really made well.”

He suggested I try Denim Doctors in Los Angeles to do a “historically correct repair” to the arm’s seams which are busted.

As with most things, I don’t like clothes that are pre-worn or pre-washed. My dad assured me this thing was bulletproof when he bought it. “Stiff as a board.”

Let me do it. It makes for a much better story. My dad’s stories of this jacket are hilarious. That dog? My dad blinded it for life with a squirt gun and a little bleach.

Let that be a lesson to dogs everywhere. You attack a Wastler’s Levi’s, be prepared to live your remaining days in the dark.

I’d give this a solid 10, and worth the price. As for My dad graduated from high school in 1970. The jacket is more than 40 years old.

Scouring the internet like I usually do I came across this jacket! Its a beautiful vintage piece from Fjallraven (y’know the company with those little backpacks?)

Fjallraven (means arctic fox) was founded in 1950 by Ake Nordin, it’s a Swedish company that has specialized in outdoor clothing. This was one of their famous jackets that helped launch them to success.

The Greenland Jacket is made from cotton and will be a nice piece to throw on in the evening. I’m gonna do a little experiment on it and try to wax it.

Its true, I really am on a camo kick right now. You might be reading this and thinking really? camo? So a few folks asked to see how I put camo in my wardrobe.

Lemme start off by saying, its not a goal to always make sure I’m wearing something with camo. It never has been, but recently I’ve realized how camo can really play down and add sportiness to any outfit.

Example, with these pants(Mark McNairy x MWR 8 Pocket Camo Cargos) I paired the camo with a Harris Tweed Blazer, Brooks Brothers Black Fleece Oxford, J.Press Tie, and last but not least some Alden Longwings (not shown).

I think there are a few simple rules when wearing camo

Mix it up, don’t let the camo control the outfit, Use it to play down what you’re wearing.

Pair it with something rugged, like a washed beat up oxford not a t-shirt.

Last, just make sure you never look like this guy.

Yes, more Nigel Cabourn. I promise its my last post about him for a while (maybe..haha). I know you might be getting sick of reading stuff about him from me, but I recently stumbled upon this video he did when he was exhibiting his Ascent of Cabourn collection at the university. This was the infamous collection that put him on the map everywhere else! Check it out!

In the most recent Outdoor Style Book from Lightning (a japanese magazine), I stumbled upon a brand I had seen before awhile back called Manastash.

Upon doing more research, I found out its made here in the USA. Heavily influenced by old Patagonia, and The North Face, Manastash pieces are made for the outdoors and always accented with bold colors and muted hues. A lot of the pieces are also made with hemp and goretex (strange combo no?).

As you can see they are a brand that doesn’t skimp on the details and is all about functionality. Many pieces they make are water resistant if not water proof and most are reversible! I would love to see these more in person and check them out more.

This jacket seems pretty slick to me, though I think to pull it off you would have to add some tweed, flecked wool, or canvas pants.
